Check Federal Inmate Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons system who is connected to Wyoming County, use the national BOP record rather than a local jail search. No BOP institution was identified in Wyoming County. A federal defendant may serve a sentence elsewhere, and “Released” means only that BOP custody ended. It does not rule out federal supervised release, state or local custody, or immigration detention. Verify identity, the displayed release date, the federal court record, and any later custodian before drawing a broader conclusion.

Federal Release Outside Wyoming County

The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates a national prison system. Research identified no BOP institution in Wyoming County, West Virginia. A person tied to the county through residence, arrest, or a federal case may be confined in another state. The physical release site is the assigned institution, not the Pineville courthouse or Southern Regional Jail.

BOP custody concerns sentenced federal prisoners. A person held before commitment may instead be in U.S. Marshals custody or a contract facility. USMS does not offer a comparable public prisoner locator and restricts public prisoner information, photographs, and arrival or departure times. Use the federal docket, BOP after commitment, or a narrow agency records request as the facts require.

Important: No local BOP institution was found, and a BOP release never proves release from every other custodian.

Search Federal Inmate Release Records

The BOP Inmate Locator preserves records for many federal inmates released after 1982. Search by BOP register number when known. FBI, DCDC, or INS numbers can also be used, or search by name with age, race, and sex filters. Identifiers are safer than a name alone.

  1. Enter the register number or the most exact biographical details available.
  2. Compare the full name, register number, age, race, and sex.
  3. Read the location or status and the displayed release date together.
  4. Save the exact wording and access time.
  5. Check the federal court case and any known later custodian.

A past release date with “Released” or no facility supports departure from BOP on that date. “Unknown” means the confinement term is undetermined, not released. A future date is projected and may change through sentence-credit calculation.

Federal Released Status Meaning

BOP explains that “Released” means the person is no longer in BOP custody. Keep the statement narrow. The person may be on federal supervised release, which is overseen through the federal court and probation system. The person may also have entered state, local, or immigration custody.

Result Safe conclusion
Released with past date BOP custody ended on the displayed date
Current institution BOP reports present placement as of its update
Future release date A scheduled or projected date that can change
Unknown The confinement term is not determined
No match Recheck identity, era, spelling, and custodian

Do not treat a BOP result as proof about Southern Regional Jail, WVDCR prison custody, ICE, or supervision. Search each custodian only when the case facts support it.

Federal Release Record Requests

For a record missing from the locator, BOP FOIA or the National Archives may hold older material. Identify the full name, birth data, register number, institutions, and approximate dates. Ask for the record showing the actual BOP release date and disposition. Privacy law can limit third-party access, and some records may require authorization or proof of death.

A federal docket can supply the judgment, sentence, detention decision, and supervision terms. It still does not replace BOP's custody exit record. A court date and a physical release date may differ because agencies complete computation, transport, detainer, and discharge steps.

BOP release
Departure from Bureau of Prisons custody.
Supervised release
Federal court supervision after imprisonment.
Detainer
A hold or request that can produce transfer to another custodian.
Transfer
Movement into another agency's custody, not community release.

Federal Release Identity Checks

Record the register number on every follow-up. People with the same name should never be merged without birth data, age, federal case, and custody history. If BOP says released while WVDCR shows a current matching person, the correct statement may be release from BOP followed by state custody.

For a person thought to have returned to Wyoming County, the Wyoming County release verification path separates Southern Regional Jail, WVDCR prison, court, and supervision records. It does not turn a federal result into a county release record.

Note: A custodian-specific release date answers when that agency's custody ended, not whether all legal control ended.

Federal Release and USMS Custody

The U.S. Marshals Service tracks federal pretrial prisoners until commitment to BOP, release, or return to another custodian, but that tracking system is not public. A person absent from BOP may still be in pretrial federal custody. Check the federal court docket for detention and release orders.

If no public route resolves the event, a narrow USMS FOIA request may be attempted. Expect privacy and law-enforcement limits. Ask for a named record and date range, not a broad conclusion that the person is free. If commitment occurred, use BOP's register number and locator as the next path.

After Federal Prison Release

Federal supervised release is distinct from parole in the West Virginia state system. The judgment and federal probation record establish the federal term. A BOP release result does not show that the supervision period has ended. Likewise, transfer to ICE or a state warrant can prevent a community return even when BOP properly reports release.

Build a short evidence log: locator result, access time, register number, release date, federal docket order, and any later custody result. That record preserves what each source actually established and avoids overstatement.

Verify Federal Release Dates

Test a federal release date against the sentence and custody history. Start with the BOP register number because it follows the federal record more safely than a common name. Compare the locator date with the judgment, any sentence modification, and the federal docket. If dates differ, preserve both and ask what event each represents.

Sentence-credit recalculation can change a future date. A past date identifies the end of the BOP custody episode reported by the locator. Neither date states whether the person entered federal supervised release, moved to another custodian, or returned to Wyoming County. Those questions require the judgment, supervision information, and later custody records.

BOP says its locator covers many people released after 1982. For earlier or missing material, identify the person, register number, institution, and approximate dates in a focused BOP or National Archives request. A broad name-only inquiry creates an avoidable identity risk.

Wyoming County Federal Handoffs

A Wyoming County connection does not change record ownership. Southern Regional Jail documents its custody, WVDCR documents state prison custody, and BOP documents federal imprisonment. If one agency hands the person to another, both records can be correct on the same day. Method, destination, and receiving identifier show the sequence.

A federal court release order proves judicial authority, not the precise custodian exit. Processing, detainer review, or transport can separate order time from departure. The final statement should stay narrow: BOP reported its custody ended, while later custody or supervision was checked apart.

Federal Records After a No Match

A BOP no-match should trigger an identity and custody review. Recheck spacing, suffixes, aliases, birth data, and the register number. Confirm that the person was sentenced to BOP rather than held as a federal pretrial prisoner, returned to a state, or confined before the locator's historical coverage. The federal docket can reveal which path fits.

For a focused records request, provide the full name, birth date, register number, approximate institutions, and custody dates. Ask for the record that shows actual release from BOP and the documented disposition. Privacy rules can restrict third-party access, so authorization or proof of death may be required for parts of a file. Requesting a named field is more effective than demanding every record.

A transfer into ICE, state custody, or local custody should be recorded as a sequence, not as a contradiction. Preserve the BOP release result, then record the receiving system's identifier and date. If no receiving source can be matched, state only what BOP proves and leave broader status unconfirmed.

Keep federal supervised release separate as well. The sentencing judgment and federal probation record control that term. A BOP locator result does not state that court supervision ended when imprisonment ended.

When dates remain unclear, ask BOP for the exact release record rather than calculating an exit from sentence length alone.
